Golden Shears
World Premier and Woolhandling Championships

On behalf of the Golden Shears International Shearing Championships, we extend our sincere thanks for your generous grant which enabled the Community and Schools programme for all local school students and the wider Wairarapa community.

Your support made it possible for thousands of young people to experience hands-on learning across the Fan Zone, the Marquee, and the Green Space. Guided tours introduced students to the full wool journey — from Shearing and Woolhandling through to fibre preparation and competition standards. A particular highlight was the Mongolian team, who captivated students with demonstrations of their traditional blade-shearing technique using scissors.

Engagement in the Wools for Schools Container was exceptional. Students explored wool innovation, design thinking, and sustainability, and many had the chance to try spinning, weaving, and even a little knitting with the help of our local Spinners and Weavers Guild.

Visits from preschools, primary, intermediate, and secondary schools remain a vital educational outing for our region. This year we welcomed a record number of students, with every stadium and marquee time slot fully booked.

Your support created an outstanding opportunity for our community’s young people to learn, explore, and connect with the wool industry in a meaningful and memorable way. It strengthened cultural understanding, showcased global shearing traditions, and hopefully inspired the next generation of makers, innovators, and rural leaders.

Kind regards

Anna Waddell Secretary

"The Grant was to contribute towards our Food Services Manager.  Our wonderful Heath helps the community and corporate groups cook dinner for the families and provides meals throughout the day.  This provides the families with more time to spend with their family while their child is in hospital. "

"On behalf of Waimanaaki and the Live and Learn Trust, we thank you for your grant to help the camp in a range of ways. With these funds we have been able to purchase sixty new mattresses for campers to enjoy in the cabins. These new mattresses have a hospital-grade cover to help ease cleaning and maintain safe, hygienic practices to ensure all those who stay in the cabins are comfortable and well looked after for many camps to come. We have also been able to purchase a generator to power the campsite during outages and provide electricity for the local Riversdale residents if there is a prolonged outage. We have also completed the upgrade to all the gas regulators on-site to ensure we are up to code
and all safe.."
